Hello from my kitchen!  I’m so excited (and, let’s be honest, totally nervous) to roll out my first From Scratch Fast video, right from my own home. I’ll be offering quick tips and recipes for getting made-from-scratch meals on the table any night of the week. The videos will be posted on my You Tube Channel – hop on over there and click the red subscribe button if you want to be alerted when new videos are posted!

First up, I’m talking shopping lists and menu planning.  I know what you’re thinking, “shopping lists, really?”  But hey, just look at how excited I am!  Seriously, making a plan is the first step in getting homemade food on the table every night, and it will save you both time and money. I have a magnetic list that perches on the side of my fridge, which I update during the week as I run out of (or run low on) items.  However, I don’t just write stuff on the list haphazardly.  Oh no, I organize my list according to the layout of my grocery store.  While it’s true that I have certain type A tendencies, it’s also true that by doing this, I save myself a bunch of time when I get to the store.  The produce is on top, which I hit up first, then the bulk products, next the canned goods, etc.  I’m like a ninja in there, and since I often have Juniper with me (a.k.a. “the ticking time bomb”) it’s essential that I’m in and out quickly.  Also, I make a menu, and I stick with it.  At the end of every week I jot a menu on the back of my list for the following week (you could also use a calendar or chalk board for this).  It takes a bit of time, but it’s worth its weight in gold.  By having a plan I know exactly what I’m making for dinner every night and can jump right into cooking after work without hemming and hawing over what to make.  Also, I buy exactly what I need and therefore don’t end up with extra food that doesn’t get used or that goes bad, meaning it saves me money.

What are your strategies and challenges for making your shopping lists?  Do you make menus, or do you fly by the seat of your pants?  I want to hear from you!
