Move over avocado toast; if you’re looking for a protein-packed, healthy and EASY breakfast, lunch or snack, you’ve got to try these cottage cheese toasts. As I often say, the secret to building dynamic, delicious meals is to layer different textures and flavors. These cottage cheese toasts are the perfect example—they feature warm, crisp toast; cool and creamy cottage cheese; and juicy/crunchy veggies or fruit. You can make them either savory OR sweet, and I’ll show you my very favorite combinations.

Cottage cheese toast
These cottage cheese tartines are the ultimate quick meal, especially when fresh fruits and veggies are at their peak. They only take minutes to make, and the combination of the creamy cottage cheese with the toast and toppings is sublime.
Ingredients
Cottage cheese is a powerhouse ingredient in my kitchen (as you may remember from this Easy Veggie Strata, these Strawberry Oat Waffles, this Healthy Veggie Dip and these Strawberry Smoothies!). In this recipe, Hood Country Style Cottage Cheese takes the leading role, lending creaminess to the toasts as well as providing a huge boost of protein.
You can use any bread you like (gluten free or regular). You’ll also need olive oil and an optional garlic clove for savory toasts.
How to make cottage cheese toast:
- Using a pastry brush, brush your bread lightly on both sides with olive oil and sprinkle it with salt and pepper. This step is key, giving the toasts a delicious crunch and flavor.
- Bake the toasts until they’re golden and crisp (you can do this in a toaster oven or regular oven). If you’re a making a savory version, rub a halved garlic clove over the warm toast.
- Spread the toasts with creamy Hood Country Style Cottage Cheese, then add the toppings of your choice!
Easy tartines
The toasts are served as open-faced tartines, meaning you can have a lot of fun with the toppings. For savory versions, I like to go for sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and/or avocado, along with baby greens or sprouts. Drizzle the toasts with extra virgin olive oil and a spritz of acid—either lemon juice, lime juice or vinegar—which will brighten up all the flavors. A sprinkle of seeds is a fun way to add more protein and crunch.
For sweet toasts, you can use either sliced fresh fruit or jam. Drizzle the toasts with honey or maple syrup, then sprinkle them with your favorite seeds or nuts, if you’d like. A sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg is also delicious. Below are some of my favorite combinations, but you can let your imagination be your guide!
Savory cottage cheese toast ideas
- Cucumber slices + sprouts + lemon juice + olive oil + sunflower seeds
- Avocado slices + grape tomatoes + cilantro + lime juice + olive oil + pumpkin seeds
- Tomato slices + baby greens and/or basil + balsamic vinegar + olive oil
Sweet cottage cheese toast ideas
- Jam + toasted nuts
- Sliced berries or peaches + maple syrup + chia and hemp seeds + cinnamon
- Sliced cantaloupe + blueberries + honey + chia seeds + mint
FAQs
Fresh fruit (think berries, peaches and melon) and/or fruit jam pairs well with cottage cheese. For a savory version, try sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and/or avocados.
If you’re really crunched for time you can skip this step, but I love how the olive oil gives the bread more flavor and crunch.
Yes! I love using Hood Cottage Cheese with Chive and Hood Cottage Cheese with Cracked Pepper on Savory Toasts, and fruit flavored cottage cheeses are perfect for sweet toasts (such as Hood Cottage Cheese with Strawberry and Hood Cottage Cheese with Blueberry).

- Rubbing the warm toasts with a halved garlic clove gives them a delicious bruschetta-like flavor.
- For savory toasts, adding a spritz of acid (such as lemon juice, lime juice or vinegar) brightens all the flavors.
- If you're using jam and it's really thick, warm it in the microwave or on the stovetop to make it spoonable.

My mom used to make this all the time I put mine under broiler for a couple minutes so the top gets brown and bubbly sooo good. I make it at least once a week. Thanks for the extra ideas
